How Allied Health Assistants Can Help

Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) working under the guidance of an occupational therapist can support clients in numerous ways:​
  • Enhancing Daily Living Skills: Supporting clients in activities such as dressing, grooming, cooking, and other daily tasks.
  • Providing Equipment Support: Assisting with the use and maintenance of adaptive equipment and technology.
  • Assist with Therapy Programs: Support and implement occupational therapy programs as directed by the supervising occupational therapist.
  • Self-Care Retraining: Implement self-care retraining programs according to the occupational therapist’s prescriptions.
  • Equipment Management: Order, provide, and demonstrate the use of basic equipment for patients/clients.
  • Home Visits: Participate in joint home visits requiring an additional staff member for assistance.
  • Safety and Conservation Advice: Provide advice on energy conservation, fall prevention, hip precautions, and personal alarms based on the occupational therapist’s recommendations.
  • Therapy Continuation: Maintain ongoing therapy programs as recommended by the occupational therapist.
  • Home Environment Modifications: Making suggestions minor home modifications to improve safety and accessibility.
  • Activity Groups: Conduct client activity groups under the direction of the occupational therapist.
  • Community Outings: Accompanying clients to social, educational, or recreational activities to foster community participation and integration.
  • Monitoring Progress: Keeping track of client achievements and areas that need further attention, reporting back to the occupational therapist.
