What is Disability Support for Older Australians (DSOA)?
The Disability Support for Older Australians (DSOA) program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide support services to older Australians living with a disability. It aims to assist individuals aged 65 and over (50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) who are not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Occupational therapists play a vital role in the DSOA program by assessing clients' physical and cognitive needs, recommending and providing adaptive equipment, and making home modifications to enhance safety and accessibility. They also offer therapeutic interventions to improve functional abilities and support clients in maintaining their independence, ensuring they can continue to engage in daily activities and enjoy a better quality of life.
What is Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)?The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an Australian Government initiative aimed at providing entry-level support services to older Australians to help them stay independent and in their homes for as long as possible. It offers a wide range of services, including domestic assistance, personal care, social support, and respite care. Occupational therapists contribute significantly to the CHSP by conducting comprehensive assessments of clients' needs, providing recommendations for adaptive equipment, and making home modifications to enhance safety and accessibility. They also deliver therapeutic interventions to improve clients' functional abilities, helping them maintain their independence and participate in daily activities effectively.

What is Home Care Package Support? The Home Care Packages (HCP) program is an Australian Government initiative designed to help older Australians live independently in their homes for as long as possible. The program provides coordinated and tailored support through various levels of care packages, each offering a range of services based on individual needs. Occupational therapists play a crucial role in the HCP program by assessing clients' functional abilities, recommending and providing assistive equipment, and implementing home modifications to improve safety and accessibility. They also develop personalised rehabilitation programs to enhance clients' independence in daily activities, thereby improving their quality of life and enabling them to stay at home longer.
What is Short-Term Restorative Care Support? The Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Programme is early intervention to reverse or slow ‘functional decline’ in older people. If you are having difficulty performing daily activities an occupational therapist can assist you with the necessary support and/or equipment to help you remain or stay in your own home for longer and to delay or avoid long-term care. Support is available for up to 8 weeks.
What is the Transition Care Program (TCP)?The Transition Care Program (TCP) is designed to help older adults regain and maintain their independence following a hospital stay. It gives them the opportunity to engage in recovery support in the comfort of their home with the view to help them remain in home for longer and be safe whilst staying at home.
