Minor to moderate home modifications

Home modifications are changes made to your home to support safer movement, access, independence and confidence.

This may include grab rails in the shower or toilet area, handrails near steps, temporary or permanent ramps, non-slip surface recommendations, access changes and emergency alarm options.

The aim is not to change everything. The aim is to identify the practical changes that reduce risk and make daily routines easier to manage.

Support starts with how you use your home

We do not start with a product list.

We start by understanding what feels unsafe, difficult, tiring, painful or no longer manageable at home.

Ask our team whether a home modification assessment may suit your needs.

The right home modification should fit the person, the task and the home.

A grab rail, ramp or handrail needs to be placed where it supports the way you actually move, reach, step, transfer and balance.

Small details matter. Height, angle, length, grip, surface, space, approach and daily routine can all affect whether a modification feels safe and useful.

How we can help

Minor to moderate home modifications can support safer access, better mobility and easier routines at home.

Grab rails

Advice on grab rail location, height, angle and use so the rail supports transfers, balance and safer bathroom routines.

Ramps and threshold access

Assessment of entry points, threshold lips, ramp length, slope, turning space and whether a portable or fixed option may be suitable.

Bathroom safety

Review of shower access, toilet transfers, wet areas, slip risk, space, supports and safer ways to complete personal care.

Handrails near steps

Support with handrail recommendations for internal or external steps, including reach, grip, side of use and safe placement.

Non-slip surface advice

Recommendations where surfaces, wet areas, entries or outdoor paths create a higher risk of slipping or losing balance.

Emergency alarms

Support to consider emergency alarm options where falls, health changes or being alone at home create safety concerns.

Grab rails, handrails and bathroom safety

Grab rails and handrails need to match your movement pattern, reach, grip and transfer needs.

Your OT can assess where support is needed and how a rail may assist with showering, toileting, stepping, balance or moving between surfaces.

We can also consider whether other supports, equipment or routine changes may work alongside the home modification.

  • Shower grab rails
  • Toilet grab rails
  • Entry handrails
  • Step safety
  • Grip and reach
  • Rail height
  • Rail angle
  • Transfer support
  • Slip risk
  • Wet area safety
  • Personal care routines
  • Support worker safety

Placement matters

A rail may not help if it is too high, too low, too far away, on the wrong side or difficult to grip.

We look at how you stand, sit, step, turn, reach and transfer before recommending where a rail should go.

The goal is a practical setup that supports safer movement, not a generic rail placement that looks right but does not help in real life.

Ramps need careful planning.

A ramp may be useful for wheelchair, scooter, walker or mobility aid access, but it needs to suit the entry point, available space and the person using it.

We consider the slope, length, landing space, surface, turns, doorway access, threshold height and how the ramp will be used day to day.

Temporary ramps may suit some situations. Other homes may need a more permanent access solution.

Ramps and access needs

Access recommendations need to work for the person, mobility aid, support needs and home layout.

We can assess the entry areas of your home and recommend practical options to improve access, reduce strain and make movement in and out of the home safer.

  • Portable ramps
  • Threshold ramps
  • Permanent ramps
  • Entry access
  • Doorway access
  • Walker access
  • Wheelchair access
  • Scooter access
  • Turning space
  • Ramp surface
  • Landing space
  • Safe daily use

What we consider during assessment

A home modification should match the person, the home environment and the task it needs to support.

  • Home layout
  • Entry points
  • Steps and thresholds
  • Bathroom access
  • Toilet transfers
  • Shower transfers
  • Falls risk

We do not provide complex home modifications

Simply Engage OT can assist with minor to moderate home modification advice and reports.

We do not complete complex home modification projects, such as full bathroom redesigns, major building works or major structural changes.

If your needs fall outside our service, we can let you know early so you can seek the right support.

Funding reports and supplier support

Some home modifications need written evidence before they can be funded or approved.

We can prepare reports that explain the functional need, safety concerns, recommended modification and how it supports independence, access and daily routines.

Where suitable, we may liaise with builders, suppliers, support coordinators or other team members to help keep recommendations clear and practical.

Clear recommendations help everyone

A good recommendation should explain what is needed, where it is needed and why it matters.

This may include photos, measurements, functional reasoning, risk considerations and the expected benefit of the modification.

We focus on practical advice that can be understood by the person, family, support team, supplier and funding body.

Who this may suit

Minor to moderate home modification support may suit people who have mobility changes, balance concerns, falls risk, pain, fatigue, disability, neurological conditions, ageing-related changes or difficulty accessing parts of the home.

It may also suit people who can manage some tasks, but need extra support to move safely, complete personal care, enter the home or use mobility equipment with more confidence.

Home modification FAQs

Common questions before getting started.

What are minor to moderate home modifications?

Minor to moderate home modifications are practical changes that support safer access, mobility and daily routines at home. This may include grab rails, handrails, ramps, threshold changes, non-slip surface advice and bathroom safety recommendations.

Can an occupational therapist recommend grab rails?

Yes. An occupational therapist can assess transfers, balance, reach, grip, bathroom layout and daily routines before recommending grab rail placement.

Can you help with ramps?

Yes. We can assess access needs, entry points, threshold heights, available space, mobility equipment and whether a temporary or permanent ramp option may be suitable.

Do you complete full bathroom modifications?

No. Simply Engage OT does not provide complex home modifications such as full bathroom redesigns, major building works or major structural changes. We focus on minor to moderate home modification advice and reports.

Can you provide NDIS home modification reports?

Yes. Where evidence is required, we can prepare written recommendations that explain the functional need, safety concerns and why the modification is being recommended.

Can you check a modification after it is installed?

Yes. Where suitable, we can review whether the completed modification is safe, practical and being used with confidence.

Do I need to know what modification I need before making a referral?

No. You can start by explaining what has become harder, less safe or more tiring at home. Your OT can help work through practical options after assessment.

Can home modifications help if I use a walker, wheelchair or scooter?

Yes. Home modification recommendations may support safer access for people using walkers, wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility aids. The right option depends on the person, equipment and home layout.

Start with what feels unsafe or difficult at home.

You do not need to start with a product name or building solution. Tell us what is harder, less safe or taking too much energy, and we can help with the next step.
