SIL and Housing Assessments

Clear OT reporting for home and living decisions.

A housing assessment helps explain what support a person needs to live more safely, confidently and independently.

This may include support with personal care, meals, medication routines, community access, household tasks, behaviour-related risks, emotional regulation, supervision or overnight support.

Housing assessments for real daily life

A housing assessment is not just about where someone lives. It is about whether their support, environment and routines are safe, realistic and sustainable.

Your OT can assess how a person manages personal care, meals, cleaning, transport, appointments, medication routines, money skills, communication, social interaction and time at home.

The goal is to provide clear recommendations that help support coordinators, families, providers and funding bodies understand the person’s daily support needs.

We start with function, not assumptions

Some people need frequent support throughout the day. Others may need flexible support, skill-building, informal help or technology to live well.

We look at what the person can do, what they need help with and what risks show up when support is not available.

Ask our team whether a housing assessment may suit your situation.

The right living arrangement should fit the person, not the other way around.

A helpful housing recommendation needs to consider safety, choice, independence, routines, relationships, support needs and the person’s goals.

We keep the assessment practical, respectful and focused on what daily life actually looks like.

How we can help

We provide OT assessment and reporting for people exploring home and living supports, SIL, ILO or changes to their current living setup.

Housing needs assessment

Assessment of current living arrangements, safety concerns, daily routines, environmental barriers and support needs at home.

SIL assessments

Assessment and reporting for people who may need regular paid support across the day, evening or overnight.

ILO assessments

Assessment of flexible living options, informal supports, paid supports, technology and the type of setup that may suit the person.

Support level planning

Clear mapping of when support is needed, what type of support is required and what may happen if support is not available.

Functional reporting

Reports that explain functional capacity, risks, support needs, daily living barriers and recommendations in plain language.

Evidence for decisions

Practical recommendations that can support NDIS home and living discussions, planning meetings or requests for changed supports.

Supported Independent Living assessments

SIL may suit people who need regular help or supervision with daily tasks to live safely and build independence.

An OT SIL assessment looks at the type of support required across a normal day and night. This may include prompting, physical assistance, supervision, emotional support, behaviour-related support or help to complete daily routines.

The report can help explain the person’s support needs, risks, support ratios and why a certain level of assistance may be needed.

  • Personal care
  • Showering and dressing
  • Meals and nutrition routines
  • Medication prompts
  • Household tasks
  • Community access
  • Overnight support
  • Active nights
  • Sleepover support
  • Supervision needs
  • Support ratios
  • Worker skill needs

SIL reporting needs clear daily evidence

A strong SIL assessment explains what support is needed, when it is needed and why it is needed.

This may include a daily support picture, risk examples, current barriers, informal support limits and the level of assistance required across key routines.

We aim to make the recommendations clear enough for the person, family, support coordinator, provider and funding body to understand.

ILO is more flexible than a standard rostered model

ILO may suit people who want more choice about where they live, who they live with and how their supports are arranged.

An ILO assessment explores the person’s goals, strengths, risks, informal supports, community connections and the paid supports that may be needed to make the arrangement work.

The focus is on building a practical living setup around the person.

Individualised Living Options assessments

ILO assessments help explore flexible home and living arrangements that match the person’s support needs, preferences and daily life.

This may include living alone, living with a housemate, living with family, host arrangements, co-residency or another setup that offers safety and connection.

What the process looks like

A clear process helps everyone understand what is being assessed and what information may be needed.

Referral

Tell us about the current living setup, concerns, goals and why a housing assessment is needed.

Information gathering

We review relevant reports, plans, routines, support information and input from the person’s support network.

Assessment

Your OT assesses daily function, support needs, risks, strengths, environment and living arrangement goals.

Recommendations

We outline practical housing, SIL, ILO or support level recommendations where clinically appropriate.

Report

You receive a written OT report that explains functional needs, support needs and home and living recommendations.

What we consider during assessment

Housing recommendations should reflect the person’s actual needs, not just their diagnosis or current address.

  • Daily living skills
  • Personal care
  • Meals and routines
  • Home safety
  • Falls risk
  • Cognitive support needs
  • Executive function
  • Sensory needs
  • Emotional regulation
  • Behaviour-related risks
  • Communication needs
  • Medication routines
  • Transport access
  • Community participation
  • Informal supports
  • Overnight needs
  • Assistive technology
  • Support worker safety

We are not a housing provider

Simply Engage OT provides occupational therapy assessment, recommendations and reporting.

We do not provide accommodation, operate SIL homes or guarantee NDIS funding outcomes.

Our role is to provide clear clinical evidence about function, support needs, risks and suitable living supports.

SIL and ILO are different support pathways

Both can relate to home and living support, but they are not the same.

SIL usually focuses on regular paid support with daily tasks, often where a person has higher or more frequent support needs.

ILO is usually more flexible and looks at a person’s preferred living arrangement, informal supports, community connection and paid support mix.

Choosing the right pathway matters

A person may not need a traditional shared support model to live well.

Another person may need structured support across the day and night to stay safe.

An OT assessment helps make the support picture clearer before decisions are made.

Who this may suit

Housing assessment support may suit people whose current home or support arrangement is no longer safe, sustainable or matched to their needs.

It may also suit people leaving the family home, changing accommodation, exploring SIL, considering ILO, needing more support or needing clearer evidence for home and living decisions.

Housing assessment FAQs

Common questions before getting started.

What is a housing assessment?

A housing assessment is an OT assessment that looks at a person’s functional capacity, daily support needs, safety risks, current living arrangement and possible home and living options.

What is a SIL assessment?

A SIL assessment looks at whether a person may need regular paid support or supervision with daily tasks. It can help explain support needs across the day, evening and overnight.

What is an ILO assessment?

An ILO assessment explores flexible living options, including where the person wants to live, who they may live with and how paid, informal, community and technology supports may work together.

Can you help decide between SIL and ILO?

Yes. An OT assessment can help clarify functional needs, safety risks, support levels and whether a more structured or more flexible support model may be suitable.

Do you provide accommodation or SIL housing?

No. Simply Engage OT provides occupational therapy assessment and reporting. We do not provide accommodation, operate SIL homes or act as a housing provider.

Can the report support NDIS home and living requests?

Yes. Where appropriate, we can prepare written evidence that explains functional capacity, support needs, risks and home and living recommendations.

Do I need to know whether I need SIL or ILO before making a referral?

No. You can start by explaining the current living situation, what is difficult or unsafe and what type of change is being considered.

Can you assess overnight support needs?

Yes. Where relevant, we can consider overnight risks, active support needs, sleepover support, supervision, emergency response and what happens when support is not available.

Start with the living situation, not the paperwork.

Tell us what is happening now, what is hard to manage and what needs to change. We can help work through the next step.
